5 Tips to land a job at HubSpot | Babson MBA Edition
Posted on Sun, Mar 27, 2011
Last summer I was taking Social Networking Analysis at Babson College as part of my Evening MBA program. It was in that class that I read an intersting case study about a company called HubSpot. To my surprise this "HubSpot" was actually trying to change the way we define Marketing as well as achieve world domination. After reading the case I instantly knew I had to work at HubSpot.
Six months later and fresh off of a Series D round of funding life at HubSpot is pretty fantastic. The company's culture, ambition, and employees make this a truly unique place to work. As a direct result of the wave of momentum we have been enjoying, and thanks to tools like LinkedIn, I have been receiving weekly inquiries from Babson MBA students as to how they too can work for such an amazing company. While there is no standard method I think the following 5 tips can at least get you started.

#1) Electives - There are a ton of marketing electives at Babson but here are a few I would recommend taking. Marketing Research and Analysis, Social Networking Analysis, Brand Management, Professional Selling, Negotiations.
Notice how these aren't all straight Marketing electives. Here at HubSpot a sense of well-roundedness is vital as it will open you up to opportunities you never considered before.
#2) Twitter/LinkedIn - Quite simply you need to be present and active on these two free social media platforms. I actually landed my interview at HubSpot just by relentlessly following, posting, tweeting, and retweeting. Find HubSpot employees, read what they are linking to, engage in conversations, and continously demonstrate your Inbound Marketing knowledge along the way.
#3) IMU - Speaking of Inbound Marketing, check out the Inbound Marketing University. This HubSpot produced certification program is an awesome (and free) resource to bone up on your Inbound Marketing skills. If you can actually get certified and apply what you have learned during your job search you are half way there already!
#4) HubSpot Blog - Check out the HubSpot Inbound Marketing Blog for the latest and greatest trends, resources, and opportunities related to the methodology that powers the HubSpot machine. Comment on some posts, attend some of the webinars, participate in general. This will give you a sense of the ideas that swirl around the HubSpot office on a daily basis.
#5) BLL -In my opinion The Bottom Line Lounge at Babson was an under utilized resource for most students. Head to the BLL after class at least once a week. You never know who will be there (this includes students and non students alike). Strike up a conversation with someone new each time. I still meet up with students/graduates/professors there from time to time. If you see me say hi!
So there are 5 simple tips. This should at least get you started in showing us here at HubSpot why we should consider you above the literally hundreds of applications that come in on a weekly basis. While you work on these elements check out the HubSpot Jobs page to see if you are a MATCH(ES) - More on this next time.
